Centrale "U"

A battery of four blast furnaces has been built by the brothers Stumm between 1890-1891 and 1897-1898 and supplemented by two other blast furnaces in 1904. Placed in receivership after the war of 1914-1918, the plant has been taken over in 1919 by the "Société des Forges et Aciéries du Nord et de Lorraine". In the early 1920s, the plant had six blast furnaces and reduced to four in the early 1930s. Between 1932 and 1935, the original furnaces were replaced by new ones. In 1965, the company became the "Société des Hauts-Fourneaux Réunis de S et d'U. (HFRSU)". The U2 has been shut down in 1964-1965. In 1974, three furnaces are still under fire, the U1, charged by skips producing cast iron hematite, and the U3 and U4, loaded with Staehler trailers and specialized in casting iron. On March 17, 1988, blast furnace number 4 (U4), rebuilt in 1976 but whose firing has been delayed by the economic downturn, is fired. In 1991, the site U has definitively been closed and the blast furnaces U1 and U4 are extincted. The U4 has been declared as a historic monument in 2001.

Since Octover 1st, 2007, the site is accessible to the public as a museum.

@Gilles
Thank you! smilies/grin.gif I'll probably not show it on PG but on Flickr because I have decided to stay in the background on PG. I need a little break from this community but I'll call it like that on Flickr. smilies/cheesy.gif
