Fort de la Chartreuse
Build in 1817 by the Dutch, the fortress of Chartreuse was intended to protect the city of Liège. It came unter control of the Belgium country during the revolution in 1830. In WW1 the Germans took property of it and it was used as a prison for resistant Belgians. A memorial stands at the door to remind the 49 people that were executed during that time. After WW1 new buildings, inaugurated in the year 1930, were added to the fortress. The fort held up to 2000 soldiers during that time. Once again, during WW2, the fort fell under control of the German invaders. During that time it served as barracks. After WW2 it was used as a US Army Hospital (until 1955). The fort has been abandoned since 1982.
