Salve Mater

The heirs of the family Spoelberg have given the 'Groot Park' (15 hectares) to the Catholic University of Leuven as a gift in the year 1915. These gave the Sisters of Charity of Gent a lease of the park to build an institution for mentally handicapped women and students of psychiatry. The plans of the new institution were signed by the architect Joseph Hachez. On june 29, 1927, the first two buildings, the administration and Santa Maria were solemnly inaugurated in the presence of the Queen Elizabeth, wife of King Albert.

The management of Salve Mater has been several years in the hands of the University Clinic St. Kamillus. At present, there are only patients in the pavilion St. Paul. Other pavilions are rented.
