Stock Exchange (Chambre du Commerce)

The first Stock Exchange building has been created in 1460. At the same place a new Stock Exchange building, "the mother of all Stock Exchanges", has been re-built in the year 1531 (by Domien de Waghemakere). It was the first building in the world designed as stock exchange and trade exchange.  The present construction, not to be confused with the Old Stock Exchange building from 1531, has been build in the late Brabant Gothic style by Joseph Schadde in the year 1872 after the entire complex burned down in 1858. The original gothic building was greatly admired by everyone. Even Queen Elisabeth I had it copied by architect Gresham and called it the Royal Exchange of London.
The present (splendid) building has a typical late 19th century metal roof with beautiful decorations.
