| Maison Heinen Exploration |

This week-end (saturday and sunday) I went together with some fellow explorers in the northern part of Luxembourg to explore a large abandoned farming house. Abandoned houses are very rare but this gem is of a exceptional beauty. We (Gennaro, Andy and Simone) were very lucky to explore it now because it is told that the house will be destroyed very soon. It took us two days to explore it and I already uploaded one picture in the newly created "Maison Heinen" gallery under Residential Art. I have created a new gallery for this location because I'll upload at least 5 more pictures in the next few days. So don't forget to come back to have a look at the latest pictures of this amazing house. | | Beauty in Decay - OUT NOW! |

Last Week-End I had the pleasure to get the keys to a house that has just been sold and the owners found it in a really delapidated state. After seen of my pictures they found that the place could be an interesting place for me to take some shots. Unfortunately I went too late and most of the furniture was already removed. I have still managed to get a couple of shots. These shots can be found in the residential Gallery. | | Written by Shantideva | | Monday, 26 July 2010 10:04 |
I had a quite adventureous exploration week-end. We left Luxembourg together with Andy and Simone on Sunday at 4 o'clock in the morning to be as early as possible on a very beautiful location. On location I realized that I left my tripod plate attached to the 70-200 lens. I do not use that lens for architecture, so I left it at home. I was lucky that a lot of people use Manfrotto Tripods and so Andy gave me his plate when he had finished taking his pictures. But I could make some nice pictures and it was a great journey that gave us the opportunity to meet some fellow explorers (Staticpulse and Urbex_Bassie). After our trip to the theatre we went to a mansion in Luxembourg. I have got the keys for this location by the owner, but unfortunately most of the furnitures have been removed and I could take only a couple of pictures. By mischance, the owner of the mansion got aware too late about my photography and the house was cleaned a couple of weeks before in order to be renovated and transformed. Up to now I have uploaded only one picture of the theatre in the Public Infrastructure Gallery. More pictures of this place and the mansion will follow as soon as I have processed them. So, don't forget to get back regularly for updates. (...and... please don't ask me for location details... ) | | Written by Shantideva | | Sunday, 18 July 2010 15:03 |
Having nothing to explore I have promptly decided to travel to some old sandstone quarries in Belgium together with Gennaro. I contacted a friend and great explorer, called Staticpulse (Danny) on the Internet, because he lives very close to the quarries and knows this labyrinths by heart and we were very lucky that he has decided to go inside the quarries anyway that day. So we had 2 great guides Danny and his daughter Tycha. This made us also meet some other great explorers I never met personally except over the Internet (Frits, Bas and Bert). You may find the new pictures in the Industrial Speleology gallery. | | Saint-Petersburg Photo Vernissage – 2010 |
| Written by Shantideva | | Friday, 02 July 2010 00:00 | I am happy to announce that I have been asked by the Head of the Department of Contemporary Art at the “Manege” Central Exhibition Hall to exhibit 28 of my pictures at the invitation-only exhibition "Saint-Petersburg Photo Vernissage 2010". I will personally be in Saint-Petersburg for the Vernissage and the opening will be at 2 o'clock PM after a small press conference. Most probably I'll give a Master Class about my photography and technique during the week I'll be there. | Date: | 10 September – 2 October 2010 | | Place: | Central exhibiton hall “MANEGE” (1, Isaakievskaya sq.) | | Organizers: | CEH “MANEGE”, EC "REAL" | | Partner: | Russian union of photoartists |
The theme of the exibition will be "TREND" in it's broader sense.
«Trends - a mirror of history, and it always follows the political events. Fashion - it is not clothing, it's a way of life. Trends - is what you eat and drink, what you wear, where you go to relax, what furniture is in your house, what kind of dog you own, what phrases you use , trends for mobile phones, trends in computer models, the trend for Japanese restaurants, the trend for green tea, which hit Russia in the past five years, etc., etc.» --- Alexander Vasilyev
At the heart of trends lies an individual style, and its world - a self-contained space, absorbing a wide range of phenomena. Through them people expresses their attitude to external forms of culture: lifestyle, serving and table manners, cars, clothing, thus trying to show their place in society, their sexuality, location, class, status level and belonging to a particular group. Photocamera gives us an opportunity to capture different aspects of fashion, its endless cycles and change of artistic images, which always embody the eras image in clothing.
This subject gives participants wide opportunities for philosophical reflections and artistic self-expression. List of participants and coorganisers... Exhibition catalogue (7,5 MB) | | Beauty in Decay: The Art of Urban Exploration |

| Written by Shantideva | | Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:32 | Last week-end a very funny photoshooting has been organized by 18 members of the photo community Photogen. Our aim was to create two variations of the well known image from Leonardo da Vinci called "The last supper". One variation was the surgery version and the second was a business version. Here is one of the pictures I have taken that day.
Please click on image for a larger preview. Unfortunately, having participed as a model to the business version, I did not take pictures from that variation. You may find the pictures in the model gallery. Thanks a lot to the whole crew for this wonderful shooting! | | Written by Shantideva | | Monday, 31 May 2010 18:05 | Destruction of the relics of the past and closure of the mines leads to the end of an era here in Luxembourg. This evolution has not begun recently. For many years now our industrial patrimony is being destroyed and closed. Having lived my life in a region of Luxembourg that shaped the whole image of this country and the whole greater region, it is very sad for me to see all those relics being closed and destroyed, that gave testimony of the hard work that our ancestors have achieved for our prosperity. Many associations have fought to preserve some of these industrial monuments, but the politicians don't seem to be interested to pay homage to our grandfathers and grandmothers that worked hard for this country. Our neighboring countries are still working hard to preserve some of these souvenirs and to convert them to industrial museums as a testimonial of those years that gave us the prosperity and quality of life we enjoy to have nowadays. But exactly this prosperity has brought us to forget about those of us that worked hard and sacrificed their lives for us. But this behavior seems to be limited to the country of Luxembourg. The politicians in Luxemburg spurn these monuments and convert them to vulgar decoration objects for megalomanic developments as it has been done in Esch/Belval. Sad... but true... The latest news I got is about the closure of the iron ore mine called "Flora". The last load of iron ore left this huge underground world called the Montrouge in 1997. It was iron ore that went from the french part of this wonderful underground labyrinth. I do not want to say that it is important to keep those places accessible but it is sad to see the entrances buried under a pile of rocks and earth. Therefore I have now decided to show the pictures from inside this huge mine publicly. I didn't have done so before because I didn't want to incite unexperienced spelunkers to visit those places. The pictures (and a small captivating movie) can be found under Mine Montrouge in the Industrial Speleology section. | | Written by Shantideva | | Sunday, 23 May 2010 18:14 | There have not been new explorations since this week-end because I was sick over the last few weeks. Fortunately I am back for good and ready for new explorations. That's what I did already twice this week-end to a closed, but not abandoned, hospital in Germany. I first went there with Michael and his girlfriend together with Carina and Gennaro. Today I returned back together with some very nice guys from Philadelphia (USA), Matt, Kevin and Mark together with two friends from the Netherlands, Martino and Bart, and Gennaro. Both explorations were very short although the place is really huge, but there are not so many things to see there. You may have a look at the first pictures in the Krankenhaus gallery under Public Infrastructure.... As always... stay tuned... more pictures will follow shortly. And may be you should also have a look in the Centrale U Gallery. I have added some pictures and I am still processing some others. But due to my sickness I was not really motivated to work a lot on post-processing. | |
